Equestrian sports in Malta have a rich history dating back to the 1970s, when events were first organized under the auspices of the La Valette Riding Club. The Malta Equestrian Federation (MEF), established in 1999, has been instrumental in governing the sport and enabling local riders to join the international leagues, including the World Dressage Championships through its affiliation with the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI).

After a brief hiatus, the MEF launched a National Strategy in 2021, aimed at laying a strong foundation for the sport’s development. This strategy, voted on by members, has successfully guided Malta’s equestrian landscape over the past five years. In collaboration with Equestri Malta, the MEF has spearheaded initiatives like the Equestri Malta National Championships and participation in global events such as the World Clubs Tournament in France. These partnerships have brought essential funding to education and events, fueling the sport’s growth.

A key focus for the MEF has been animal welfare, with an emphasis on integrating health and care into every aspect of the sport. The Federation worked with Equestri Malta to include welfare standards in its instructor training syllabus, ensuring that health remains a top priority. Veterinarians are present during competitions to monitor the fitness and health of equine athletes, maintaining the integrity of the sport.

On the educational front, Malta has seen significant advancements through training programs supported by the FEI, EEF, and Equestri Malta. These programs have cultivated skilled judges, stewards, and course designers who have elevated the quality of equestrian events on the island. Additionally, a coach’s register—developed in collaboration with Equestri Malta—has enhanced training opportunities for prospective coaches, blending first aid, introductory courses, and FEI Level 1 coaching qualifications. This initiative reflects the MEF’s ongoing focus on youth development as the next step in building a strong sporting future.

The past five years have seen exponential growth, with membership and participants doubling—many of them young riders. However, the growth has highlighted the need for improved facilities. Addressing these challenges, the MEF aims to work with partners to develop high-quality footing and a national arena, essentials for advancing Maltese athletes to international levels.

Today, MEF hosts a variety of competitions throughout the year, culminating in the prestigious Championship Cup. With unwavering commitment to the codes of conduct established by FEI, focusing on horse welfare, environmental responsibility, and fair play, MEF exemplifies the future of equestrian sports in Malta.

As Max Zammit from Equestri Malta explains, the dedication to innovation, education, and welfare is setting the stage for Maltese riders to shine on the global stage. The island’s equestrian community is more dynamic than ever, driven by a shared passion for excellence.

This is just the beginning for equestrian sports in Malta, as the MEF and Equestri Malta continue to champion development, innovation, and growth in the sport.
