En Polo HUB hablamos con el presidente de la asociación Argentina de Polo sobre la importancia de las competencias internacionales la participación en la Coronation Cup y cómo ve a la selección Argentina hacia el futuro.
Delfín, que significa para Argentina poder participar en eventos internacionales?
En primer lugar creo que fomentar la competencia entre países, competencia deportiva entre países, creo que es algo muy lindo y muy sano para todos los deportes. Por un lado, genera que todo un país, que a veces es algo muy difícil lograrlo con un equipo, de un club, esté atrás de un mismo objetivo. Cuando se hizo el Mundial Femenino, más allá de que la gente sepa de polo o no sepa de polo, todo el mundo vino a alentar a un mismo equipo, que es el equipo argentino. Entonces, en términos de construcción de audiencias, creo que es muy positivo, no solamente construye audiencias que van al partido, sino que audiencias que no llegan al partido, les interesa la nota. Tienen mucho más chances de que esa nota o que esa información se repita en medios que sí cubren, digamos, por ahí no el deporte específicamente, pero sí temas deportivos relacionados con la selección del país. Entonces lográs que un país esté detrás de un deporte y no solamente los aficionados a ese deporte. Entonces creo que al deporte le es muy útil para que se expanda el conocimiento del mismo.
Por otro lado es muy importante en el desarrollo de deportistas, poder representar a tu país es algo muy lindo, es algo muy único, yo tuve la suerte de poder vivirlo primero en el sudamericano jugando acá en Palermo, en una Argentina-Brasil que fue una experiencia que no me voy a olvidar nunca en mi vida, que la verdad que la cancha estaba detonada de gente y después en la experiencia de haber vivido un mundial de polo en Chile, donde ahí fue al revés, la cancha estaba detonada de gente, de chilenos que fueron a Chile versus Argentina, así que como experiencia de un deportista poder representar a tu país es algo realmente único y eso hace que se generen incentivos para que la gente quiera practicar el deporte, o sea aspirar a ser seleccionado es algo que hace que mucha más gente quiera participar. de ese deporte, porque genera como un objetivo.
Entonces, las selecciones como generación de nuevos jugadores o de que jugadoras quieran de vuelta aspirar a estar en el seleccionado hace que más gente lo juegue. Es un poco el caso, si querés, volviendo al Mundial Femenino, lo que pasó con Brasil, que el polo femenino en Brasil ni siquiera estaba federado. Bueno, con la aparición de un Mundial hizo que se federen, que tengan hándicap y que el polo femenino se empiece a desarrollar en Brasil y en otros países. Entonces, es un gran vehículo para que se aumente la cantidad de personas que lo jueguen, además de personas que lo vean.
También la competencia entre seleccionados es algo muy lindo porque es muy linda la competencia entre países, o sea, por un lado te hace competir pero por otro lado te une. Entonces el deporte une naciones que a veces la política o las realidades la dividen y el deporte une eso que es prácticamente imposible, entonces también es un lindo factor de unión y el compartir y de compañerismo y de un montón de historias que hay entre argentinos y gente de otras naciones que a partir del deporte se unieron y generaron grandes cambios y grandes cosas, así que también genera y fomenta eso ¿no? La unión entre países la amistad entre países.
Que significa que Argentina juegue una vez más Coronation Cup en el Guards Polo Club?
Que estemos jugando la Coronation, es un honor. La verdad que las copas con historia, las copas con trayectoria, con muchos años, de alguna manera, te llevan a decir, voy a jugar esta copa que la jugó tal, que la jugó el otro, que la ganó, que la perdió, que se juega hace tantos años, que representa. Entonces, es un lindo, es una cosa muy representativa, es algo muy fuerte poder participar de esa copa, además de un Test Match, porque acá es un Test Match y es una copa histórica. Así que hay mucha historia detrás de esa copa, valga la redundancia. Así que creo que es un honor. Y bueno, la Coronation, como decís vos, se juega en Guards, que es volver a la corona, a estar representado por la familia real, o a estar en una actividad dentro de la familia real, que en Inglaterra… es tan importante. Así que realmente es algo muy lindo que esté pasando y celebro que nos hayan invitado y celebro que se juegue todos los años y que haya vuelto a ser jugada donde debe ser jugada que es en el Guards Polo Club.
Cómo se dio que armaron el equipo para representar a Argentina con los Ulloa y los Lahule?
Pensamos en un equipo que, por un lado, muestre algo propio de este deporte, que es las parejas de hermanos, o los equipos de hermanos, que han sido muy famosos en este deporte, es algo muy característico del polo. Está, por un lado, el ejemplo de Coronel Suárez, de una pareja de hermanos. Están también los equipos de Mar del Plata, con la pareja de hermanos de los Tanoira, la pareja de hermanos de los Pieres, los Heguy, por supuesto y no solo parejas, sino yendo también a tríos y cuartetos como los Novillo. Entonces, han habido muchas parejas de hermanos muy clásicas y muy conocidas en el deporte, y la verdad que era muy lindo hacerlo con, no solo parejas de hermanos, sino también con un poco de mostrar la juventud.
Como los chicos hoy, de alguna manera, están llegando muy rápido a competir en alto nivel y era una especie de algo lindo para mostrar de que podemos poner un equipo joven y que al mismo tiempo combine esta idea de pareja de hermanos y de un deporte de familia, ¿no?
Y bueno, un poco la idea es aprovechar esta Coronation Cup y empezar a replicar esto de que la selección argentina vaya y compita en otros países, incluso mucho fuera de Argentina.
Poder competir en los países de origen, o sea, de donde en cierta forma importamos un poco el polo que viene de Asia y de India, de Europa, de Inglaterra, que le dio un poco las reglas al deporte.
Así que después de Inglaterra, la idea es ir a España y tener una especie de test match con el equipo que ganó el mundial de polo, que lo ganó España. Así que también, de vuelta, volviendo a tratar de que se repita esto, ¿no? De que más gente lo vea, más gente lo juegue y más gente lo quiera patrocinarlo.
Y como ves el futuro de las competencias internacionales?
Y un poco algunos de los sueños que uno tiene en la vida está bueno contarlos porque si uno los cuenta, tiene más chance de que se vuelvan realidad y si uno trabaja para que los sueños se vuelvan realidad también hay más chance de que suceda Estoy hablando con Adolfito Cambiaso y con la Asociación Americana de Polo para hacer la Copa de las Américas de vuelta.
El polo también tiene una particularidad muy linda que es la inclusión de la mujer en el deporte y que la mujer pueda competir al mismo y máximo nivel que el hombre juntos O sea, un polo especie de mixto.
Pero la verdad que esto me empezó a pasar cuando la vi a Mia Cambiaso jugando el Abierto Juvenil que le tocó jugar la final y la verdad que la marcaban de igual a igual y creo que mía metió como 5 ó 6 goles, después empecé a ver que estaba pasando esto en este año fuerte en Inglaterra, en cada uno de los equipos de alto handicap, había varias mujeres argentinas e inglesas al mismo tiempo y entonces dije ¿qué pasa si jugamos la Copa de las Américas donde la mujer juegue con su handicap de esa manera uno llega a 8 o 10 goles aportados por la mujer.
¿Y qué pasa si juegan tres hombres donde se puede llegar a, no sé, 21, 24 goles que puedan juntar juntos los hombres de Estados Unidos o algo parecido, cosa que tengas un partido de alto hándicap de 32, 34 goles, donde el hándicap esté compuesto por la suma de los hombres en el hándicap general y que la mujer juegue con el hándicap que ella tiene, el hándicap femenino? Y asi que vuelva la competencia internacional al máximo nivel y que al mismo tiempo le mostremos al mundo que el polo es sumamente inclusivo y que lo pueden jugar al máximo nivel juntos, el hombre y la mujer.
Y yo creo que haciendo algo así, donde podamos demostrarle al mundo que el deporte del bolo se puede jugar en alta competencia entre hombres y mujeres, tenemos alguna chance de presentarnos en el mundo de los deportes olímpicos, y quien, no sé, quien te dice que por algún día volvemos a ser olímpicos. Por lo menos en una primera instancia como deporte de exhibición, que me encantaría que eso suceda en Estados Unidos, en Los Ángeles. Creo que estando hoy en Estados Unidos como embajador de Argentina Gerardo Werthein, que es un amante de los caballos y un amante de estas cosas, y que en su momento nos propuso hacer algo así, no tengamos una chance de poder hacerlo. Y también Nacho Figueras, que es un gran impulsor de estas ideas, y poder… Deporte Showcase, creo que se llama, donde podamos mostrar una competencia entre hombres y mujeres de distintos países, jugando al máximo nivel.
Entonces, le estoy proponiendo a la Asociación Americana de Polo lanzar la Copa de las Américas con este formato, jugando primero en Estados Unidos y después en el segundo partido, digamos, la revancha o como se llame, en Argentina, en Palermo, por supuesto.

Delfín Uranga: «The Polo promotes friendship between countries»

Delfín, what does it mean for Argentina to be able to participate in international events?
First of all, I think that encouraging competition between countries, sports competition between countries, I think it is something very nice and very healthy for all sports. How did they put together the team to represent Argentina with the Ulloa and the Lahule?
We think of a team that, on the one hand, shows something typical of this sport, which is the couples of siblings, or the teams of siblings, which have been very famous in this sport, is something very characteristic of polo. And how do you see the future of international competitions?
